You can spot these models by their Geyser Blue paint option and copper-colored accents. The X-MODE system in Wilderness models features special settings to accommodate various conditions, ranging from dirt to deep mud. Outback Wilderness

The 2025 Outback is available in nine trim levels. Base models start at $29,995 with a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter engine and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The Wilderness trim, priced at $41,710, has a 260-horsepower turbocharged BOXER engine that produces 277 lb-ft of torque with a 3,500-pound towing capacity, 9.5 inches of clearance, and a standard skid plate that protects the undercarriage on rough trails. It comes with 17-inch black wheels and Yokohama tires, and it includes copper trim, flared arches, and water-resistant seats.

Forester Wilderness

The Forester Wilderness is small enough for tight forest roads but tough enough for serious off-roading. It can tow 3,000 pounds, twice the standard Forester’s capacity, thanks to its 2.5L BOXER engine with 182 horsepower and an eight-speed manual transmission. This extra muscle means you can actually pull small teardrop campers that would be too much for a regular Forester.

The Forester is reliable, spacious, and features a wide rear gate that makes loading gear effortless. The X-MODE system includes settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud, as well as hill-descent control that takes the stress out of steep downhills. Its shorter wheelbase makes it extremely maneuverable on tight trails, while the cabin remains comfortable enough for weekend camping trips. The Forester’s Sport trim saves you some cash if you don’t need max towing power, but that doubled capacity on the Wilderness is worth considering if you’ve got adventure toys to haul.

Crosstrek Wilderness

The 2025 Crosstrek is available in five trim levels, but the Wilderness trim features a stiffer platform that provides a more capable experience on rough terrain. Its 2.5-liter BOXER engine delivers 182 horsepower and can tackle inclines of up to 38 degrees with its revised gearing. It features a 3,500-pound towing capacity, 9.3 inches of ground clearance, a front skid plate, and specially designed bumpers that prevent snagging on obstacles. The 17-inch black wheels use aggressive Yokohama GEOLANDAR tires for loose surfaces.

Ascent

The 2025 Ascent is Subaru’s biggest SUV ever. It seats seven or eight people with up to 153.2 cubic feet of passenger space, can tow a substantial 5,000 pounds, and is powered by a 260-horsepower turbocharged BOXER engine. That massive towing capacity means you can easily pull pop-up campers or travel trailers in the 4,000-pound range without breaking a sweat. The Ascent’s huge cargo area fits all your stuff while everyone stays comfy on the drive.

X-MODE comes standard on every Ascent, so muddy trails and steep hills won’t slow you down. It sits a bit lower than the Wilderness models and works better as a “soft-roader,” but it strikes a great balance between family comfort and off-road ability. The standard AWD gives you peace of mind on unpaved roads and moderate trails, which is perfect if your family wants Subaru adventures without giving up everyday comfort.

Solterra

The 2025 Solterra is Subaru’s first electric SUV with Symmetrical AWD. It can go up to 227 miles on a charge, sits 8.3 inches off the ground, and uses a StarDrive electric system with a Power Mode option. With the Solterra, you can explore rough terrain while reducing your carbon footprint, thanks to dual-function X-MODE and Grip Control technology that works exceptionally well on sand. The dual electric motors provide instant torque, which is particularly useful on technical terrain. However, its 227-mile range means you’ll need to plan carefully for longer trips away from charging stations.
