What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone running the latest version of iOS

  • A high-quality Lightning-to-USB cable if your Impreza uses wired CarPlay

  • Your Impreza parked with the ignition on and the center screen awake

Note on model years: Many Impreza models support CarPlay with a USB cable. Newer Imprezas with the 11.6-inch display may also support Wireless Apple CarPlay. If you do not see a Wireless option, use a cable and follow the “Wired setup” steps.

First-Time Setup: Wired Apple CarPlay

  1. Start the car and let the multimedia screen fully load.

  2. Unlock your iPhone. If a prompt appears asking to “Trust This Computer,” tap Trust and enter your passcode.

  3. Plug the Lightning cable into the Impreza’s USB port labeled with a smartphone or CarPlay icon.

  4. Accept prompts on both screens:

    • On the Impreza screen, choose Apple CarPlay and allow access.

    • On your iPhone, allow CarPlay when the vehicle is locked if you want it to connect automatically next time.

  5. CarPlay launches on the center screen. You’ll see your familiar iOS app grid adapted for driving.

Next time you drive: Just plug in your iPhone and CarPlay will start automatically.

First-Time Setup: Wireless Apple CarPlay (if equipped)

  1. Start the car and make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on your iPhone.

  2. On the Impreza screen, go to SettingsPhone or ConnectionsAdd Device.

  3. On your iPhone, open SettingsGeneralCarPlayAvailable Cars, then select your Subaru.

  4. Confirm pairing codes on both screens. Approve all prompts to enable Wireless CarPlay.

  5. After pairing, CarPlay launches wirelessly. Future drives will connect automatically once the car starts.

Using Siri Safely

  • Press and hold the voice button on the steering wheel to talk to Siri.

  • Say things like:

    • “Get directions to Conley Subaru in Bradenton.”

    • “Text Alex that I’m on my way.”

    • “Play ‘Daily Drive’ podcast.”

  • You can also say “Hey Siri” if that setting is enabled on your iPhone.

Navigation Tips with Apple Maps

  • Tap Maps in CarPlay or say “Directions to 816 Cortez Rd W, Bradenton, Florida.”

  • Use the recent destinations list to resume trips.

  • Tap the ETA panel to share your arrival time with contacts.

Audio and Messaging Basics

  • Music/Podcasts: Open Music, Spotify, Podcasts, or your favorite audio app and tap Play.

  • Phone: Tap Phone to view recent calls, voicemail, and contacts.

  • Messages: Use Siri to read and reply without taking your eyes off the road.

Make CarPlay Your Default Home Screen

  • In CarPlay, tap the grid icon to switch between Subaru’s native interface and Apple CarPlay.

  • Drag apps around on your iPhone under SettingsGeneralCarPlaySubaru to reorder icons.

Quick Troubleshooting

If CarPlay does not appear or disconnects, try these fixes in order:

  1. Check your cable. Low-quality or damaged cables cause most connection issues. Use an MFi-certified Lightning cable.

  2. Unlock your iPhone. CarPlay may not initialize on a locked phone the very first time.

  3. Restart both systems. Turn the car off, open the driver’s door, wait 60 seconds, then restart. Also restart the iPhone.

  4. Reset connection permissions:

    • iPhone: SettingsGeneralCarPlay → tap your Subaru → Forget This Car, then set up again.

    • Vehicle: Remove the device in SettingsBluetooth/Phones and re-pair.

  5. Update software: Make sure your iPhone is on the latest iOS. If Subaru software updates are available, our service team can help install them.

  6. Wireless only: Ensure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both turned on in iPhone Settings. For the first pairing, keep the phone inside the cabin and avoid other active Bluetooth pairings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Waze or Google Maps?
Yes. Install them on your iPhone and the app icons will show up in CarPlay. Some apps appear under the More Apps panel.

Will my texts show on screen?
CarPlay keeps messages hands-free. Siri will read messages aloud and you can dictate replies.

Why does my battery drain quickly?
Wireless CarPlay uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If you take long trips, consider plugging in to charge while you drive.

Can two phones be connected?
You can pair multiple phones, but only one CarPlay session runs at a time. Use the Connections menu to switch devices.
